Across the United States, summer vacation is a tradition cherished by students and families alike. I myself find that the last few months of school end up turning into a countdown to carefree days. Though cherished, summer vacation can have detrimental effects. Students end up losing some retained knowledge of math and reading during the respite. This evidence has led the country in a debate of whether the summer tradition should still exist. While some believe the learning detriments should lead to the institution of year-round school programs, I believe that summer vacation is far too beneficial with its potential to foster an environment in which one’s identity and creativity can develop. Yes, summer vacation does, in fact, contribute to a loss of learning in core subjects such as math and reading. As Jeff Smink stated in â€Å"This Is Your Brain on Summer†, â€Å"Decades of research confirm that †¦ the average summer learning loss in math and reading for American students amounts to one month per year†. These writings were combined with the much older Jewish Torah and Talmud to form the Christian Bible of today. The Apostles also formed the early Christian church as a separate entity from traditional Judaism. In its remarkable history that church would suffer centuries of persecution then would rise to the heights of political and social power. It also would endure many splits. The largest single denomination within the Christian church is Catholicism. The Protestant Reformation of the middle ages would eventually spawn hundreds of new denominations. The history, theoretical perspectives and rites of each of these denominations differs from the others. God the Father, God the son (Jesus) and God as the Holy Spirit comprise what is known as the godhead. Judaism, by contrast, does not recognize Jesus as God. Although many first century Jews viewed Jesus as a heretic or even a false prophet, most now accept that he was a prophet but not that he was the messiah. Christianity is heavily influenced by Judaism. The books of the Torah form Christian conceptions of the beginning of the world, the sinfulness of man and the promise of a coming messiah. Jesus himself preached in the Jewish synagogues and often cited Old Testament prophecy. St. Augustine of Hippo, argued that philosophical reflection complemented theology, but only when these philosophical reflections were firmly grounded in a prior intellectual commitment to the underlying truth of the Christian faith. (Stanford University, 2008) The Jews of the first century doubted that Jesus could be the messiah that had been promised in the book of Isaiah. He was a carpenter from humble origins. His parents were unmarried at the time Mary began pregnant with Jesus. The family faced ostracization as a result. Joseph, the baby’s earthly father, had considered sending his wife away before the baby was born. Since he and Mary had not yet had sex, Joseph suspected that the pregnancy was the result of an affair. According to the Christian bible, Joseph was convinced not to send her away by a vision from God and consultation with Jewish elders. The baby was to be the messiah born of a virgin. If the Jewish community doubted the humble beginnings of the young messiah, some of his early teachings raised even more concern. While Jesus recognized that the Jewish people were the chosen people of the Old Testament the messiah was not to be reserved to them. Jesus came to atone for the sins of all people. Those of any culture who accepted him in faith could receive this atonement. Judaism had already existed for centuries by that time. During this span of time theologians had created hundreds of specific rules regarding worship and everyday life. For many Jews piety was judged in concordance with obeying of these rules. Jesus challenged this assumption. By working on the Sabbath and performing other acts that broke the rules, Jesus sent a clear message that true faith was about much more than obeying the rules. He told the elders that they could not â€Å"earn their way† in to heaven. In doing so he challenged the well-established social order. As Jesus had faced skepticism and outright hostility, so too would the early Christian Church. Theologians such as St. Paul would face resistance from all sides. The Jews, particularly the elite classes, strongly disagreed with the proposition that Jesus was the messiah. The ruling Romans saw a threat that could erode their empire from within. The nation was not in good shape, and was all divided up. President Abraham Lincoln saw this division, and wanted to reconstruct the nation, by restoring national unity. Reconstruction did not only restore national unity, but more importantly it helped the blacks gain the personal rights that they deserved. These two reasons show why Reconstruction was successful. President Lincoln wanted to heal the wounds of the nation. He wanted to look past the war, and ahead to peace. President Lincoln spoke of this in his second inaugural address. His main purpose of Reconstruction was restoring national unity. President Lincoln wanted to do this by getting the states to come together. To be able to do this, Lincoln proposed the 10% Plan. This plan stated that once 10% of the registered voters in a state had renounced succession, then they could rewrite a state constitution, and submit it for reentrance into the Union. Lincoln said, if they come back now, the Union would respect all property, except slaves. Soon after Lincoln had proposed these ideas, John Wilkes Booth assassinated him. When this occurred Andrew Johnson took over as president. Very soon after he was sworn in, Johnson announced his plan of reconstruction, which was very similar to Lincolns. Andrew Johnson with the help of Congress drew up the Reconstruction Acts of 1867. These acts were very similar to Lincolns plan in that they required the states to draw up new constitutions before they could be readmitted to the Union. Through these acts, education soared. Every state started a system of public education, and began building schools. Each state also trained teachers to fill the open spots in the schools. Through education, the nation gradually came to unity, and President Abraham Lincolns dream came true. Reconstruction was successful in restoring the nations unity. Reconstruction not only restored the nations unity, but it helped the slaves to gain personal rights. During this time, a freedmans life changed dramatically. One thing that changed was the blacks social lives. Since blacks were now free, they were able to do as they please. Now blacks were able to travel, and find friends and family, that they had lost during slave trading. Now they could own property, and to sue, and be sued in court. Blacks could also legally participate in a religion, which they couldnt do during slavery. They could now establish their own churches. This was important because these churches promoted black education, and helped freedmen who could not provide for themselves. Black churches were very helpful to the black community. Basically blacks gained more control over their personal lives, which they didnt have during slavery. During this time of Reconstruction, blacks lives also changed economically. Blacks were no longer slaves, they were no longer under the whip. Most of them worked for very little wage, but anything was better than being a slave. Some blacks worked at sharecropping. This is where they farmed someones land and got half the earnings. The other half went to the landowner, which were usually wealth white men. Sharecropping allowed blacks to make their own decisions, they could decide who would work, for how long would they work, and how hard they would work. It just simply gave blacks the right to what they wanted to do. Blacks lives changed politically during Reconstruction. While blacks were slaves they never had the chance to get an education, they were always out in the fields. Because of this most of them were illiterate. But they were smart enough to realize that without the right to vote, they had no say so in the government.
